Getting a Better Seal Around Your Stoma: A Guide to Hollister CeraPlus™ Barrier Rings

Leaks around the stoma are frustrating, and they can lead to irritated skin. Barrier rings are a simple way to improve the fit of your pouching system. This guide covers what Hollister’s CeraPlus™ Rings are, how to use them, and which size to choose.

What Are CeraPlus™ Rings?

CeraPlus™ Rings are moldable barrier rings that go around the stoma to help prevent leaks and peristomal skin problems. They’re infused with ceramide, a substance that, according to Hollister, helps protect the skin’s natural moisture barrier and limits the water loss that can lead to dryness and damage.

What Do They Do?

  • Help keep drainage from getting under your skin barrier. This is the main job of any barrier ring.
  • Fill in dips and creases around the stoma to create a smoother surface, so your barrier sits more securely.
  • Stretch and mould by hand to seal snugly around your stoma, whatever its shape.
  • Come in different sizes and thicknesses to suit individual needs.

How to Use a CeraPlus™ Ring

  1. Wash and dry your skin thoroughly.
  2. Take the ring out of its tray and peel the protective liners from both sides.
  3. Stretch and shape it if needed so it fits your stoma.
  4. Apply it. You can either press the ring onto the adhesive side of your skin barrier, or place it on your skin around the stoma first and then apply your pouching system. Make sure it sits where your skin and stoma meet.
  5. Stack rings if needed. If one ring doesn’t give you a good fit, you can layer two.
  6. Remove it gently. Peel the ring away from your skin when you change your pouching system.

Hollister CeraPlus™ Ring FAQ

Common questions about Hollister’s CeraPlus™ barrier rings.

A slim ring stretches and shapes just like the standard one, but it has a lower profile. That may suit you if you prefer something less bulky under clothing.

No. Either side can go against your skin.

Yes. The rings stretch and mould easily, so you can shape one to match your stoma.

Hollister says many people find rings easier to apply and remove than paste, and that rings are more durable and tend to resist erosion from ostomy output. According to the manufacturer, most people find that rings eliminate the need for paste.

CeraPlus™ Rings are alcohol-free, so they shouldn’t sting when applied to broken or irritated skin. That said, irritated skin around the stoma should be checked by a stoma care nurse, who can work out the cause and help prevent further problems.

Yes. The rings can be cut, stretched, or stacked to improve the fit of your pouching system.

No. Rings are single-use. Reusing one can lead to poor adhesion, and cleaning, disinfecting, or sterilizing it may compromise the product and cause odour or leakage.

A stoma care nurse or healthcare practitioner can help with your pouching system or any skin irritation. Always read the product’s instructions for use before you start.
