Types of Urine Bags
CanMedDirect offers a wide range of urine bags in different types, sizes, and designs to suit every need. In some cases, your healthcare provider may recommend more than one type, making choosing the right option a bit overwhelming, especially if you’re new to them. Нere’s a list of the most common urine bag types to help you choose the right one:
- Standard urine bags — made from durable medical materials, hold up to 2 litres, and include anti-reflux valves to prevent backflow;
- Leg bags — compact, portable bags that attach discreetly to the thigh or calf, giving you the freedom to stay mobile while draining urine;
- Night drainage bags (bedside bags) — larger-capacity bags made for overnight or long-term use;
- Closed-system urobags — pre-connected to catheters with a sealed drainage system to reduce infection risk;
- Pediatric urine bags — smaller bags created specifically for children.
Remember that choosing the right urine bag depends on your needs, mobility, and expected time of use. Keep your doctor's recommendations in mind, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact our support team.
How to Use a Urine Bag?
Modern urine bags are quite easy to use and maintain. Here are three easy steps to help you use any type of urobag properly:
- Attach and position securely — connect the urine bag to the catheter and make sure it’s placed below the bladder level (for leg bags, attach comfortably to the thigh or calf; for night bags, hang on the bed or a stand).
- Ensure proper drainage — check that the tubing is free of kinks or loops that could block urine flow.
- Empty and clean as needed — drain the bag into the toilet when it’s about one-third to half full (always wash your hands before and after). Close the valve tightly, and replace bags as recommended.
Following these three simple but very important steps will allow you to maintain hygiene, prevent infection, and stay comfortable while using a urine bag.
